What Makes Jesus Spit

What would make Jesus say that he’s ready to spit a church out of its mouth?

In Revelation 3:14-21, in his message to the church in Laodicea, Jesus tells his people that he’s

ready to spit them out because they’ve become lukewarm and lost their passion and purpose to live for him.

Jesus says to them, “… you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.”  To be lukewarm is to be content with your wealth, ability, heart, or anything other than him.   People often look to the world to sustain them, but Jesus reminds us that a relationship with Himself is the only true wealth and proper sustenance.

Perhaps you see yourself as “a self-built man or woman.” But Jesus has a natural distaste for self-sufficiency.  Jesus calls us to live in a way that is desperate for him alone.

Prayer is the beginning and foundation of our desperate pursuit of Jesus as the sustainer of our lives.  This week, consider praying the prayer of the blind man on the side of the road who called out to Jesus, “Lord, have mercy on me – I want to see!”
